Average Hourly Rates for Temporary, Permanent, and Summer Nannies 

Nanny hourly rates vary depending on the nanny's experience/education, the job requirements, the living situation (live-in or live-out), and the number and ages of children.

Pre-pandemic, the average rates we saw were $17-$22/hour. The pressures from COVID-19, an increase in families looking for nannies, rapidly rising housing and fuel costs along with general inflation have caused the market to shift nationally. Locally, there has been a market shift to $24-$30/hour across the board. The market is currently highly competitive. 

Benefits and Perks

The staff of Hilton Head Nannies works with families to educate them on how to be good employers, inclusive of advising families on benefits packages. We believe that hard-working, dedicated, professional caregivers should earn professional wages and benefits. These are some of the benefits offered with some permanent and temporary nanny compensation packages.

Health Insurance

Health Insurance is a standard benefit for nannies.  Most families pay for at least half of the premium. 

Covid-19 Screening

Paid Sick Days

While the State of South Carolina does not mandate private sector employers to provide paid sick leave, most employers recognize the importance of this benefit. A standard number of paid sick days is 5 in the Lowcountry.

Paid Vacation/Holidays

The industry standard number of vacation days per calendar year is 2 weeks (10 days for 5 day workweeks, 12 days for 6 day work weeks) and 7-10 Federal Holidays. Additionally, many families give the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

Cell Phone Contribution

Some families will make a contribution toward the nanny's cell phone bill monthly due to the heavy communication required by the nanny on behalf of the family.

Some families will contribute 2-5 paid days so that their nanny may take advantage of conferences and learning opportunities that will benefit their family.

Continuing Education Stipend/Contribution

Some families will provide a continuing education stipend for nanny conferences and classes. Some families will contribute a set amount, others will offer airline miles for tickets, and others will pay for all expenses. This varies widely by families. 

Hilton Head Nannies does not set rates or benefits for temporary, permanent, summer or newborn care positions. All Compensation packages are negotiated directly between families and nannies. All fees for the agency are paid by the families. We do not take a cut of your income. Rates may change with market shifts. 



Rates are pre-determined/contracted for all Registry, Vacation Nanny, and On-Call Appointments. Nannies have the opportunity to ask for appointments, choosing the jobs they want to take and when they want to work. There are no benefits with this kind of work, though the flexibility is perfect for many people. 

Registry, Vacation Nanny & On-Call Appointments

  • Babysitting Registry: The pay for these appointments is $17-28/hour with an average of $22-$24/hour. There are opportunities to earn more on the holidays. There is a 4 hour minimum for each appointment. You are paid directly by the family at the end of each appointment. Work is flexible - you accept the appointments you want to accept. 

  • Vacation Nanny Appointments: The pay for these appointments varies from $17/hour to $40+/hour with opportunities to earn more on the holidays. There is a 4 hour minimum for each appointment. Most of our vacationing clients also tip. You are paid directly by the family at the end of each appointment. Work is flexible - you accept the appointments you want to accept. 

  • On-Call Work: You provide the hours you want to be available to be On-Call for last minute appointments and we will work to match you with a client. The pay for these appointments varies from $17/hour to $40+/hour with opportunities to earn more on the holidays. There is a 4 hour minimum for each appointment. Most of our vacationing clients also tip. You are paid directly by the family at the end of each appointment. The work is flexible because you set your own schedule.
